Welcome to the second issue of Lenzing Nonwoven eNews!
Cooperation with Weyerhaeuser
Lenzing and Weyerhaeuser have agreed to develop a technology for the large-scale industrial production of lyocell-based nonwoven products.
The innovative technology offers a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based materials. A solution of cellulose is processed directly into a nonwoven fabric without intermediate process steps.
Lenzing - the world market leader in cellulose staple fibers - found Weyerhaeuser to be an ideal partner. Weyerhaeuser has an extensive intellectual property portfolio in forestry, wood products and cellulose fibers.
The new collaboration combines the expertise of two innovative companies in an ideal manner. Both companies are dedicated to expanding the range of applications for renewable resources and both are committed to the principles of sustainability.

Focus Innovation
Lenzing's research activities are concentrating on the application and further development of specific and advantageous fiber properties of Lenzing Viscose® and TENCEL® for a multitude of demanding nonwoven-products.
Numerous innovative developments will soon be brought to the market or are already commercial. This leads to a continuous growth of the Lenzing fibers product portfolio:
- As biopolymer-fibers in completely degradable, ecologically responsible wet wipes
- In the strengthening of materials to deliver weight reduction and enhanced stability
- In the performance of specialty papers in batteries
- In the medical area as a fiber for special, non-adhesive wound-dressings

Life Cycle analysis for fibers
The University of Utrecht conducted a comparison of environmentally relevant data of synthetic, cellulosic and cotton based fibers. Robert Smith held a paper on the results of this Life Cycle Analysis study at the PIRA Sustainable conference (29. - 30.04. in Orlando) which is available for download. In the next issue of this newsletter you will find further details on the study.
